STUDY DAY AT HAFOD

On Friday 5th September 2008 the Georgian Group will be holding a Study Day at Hafod.

Speakers will look at the process of researching, recording, and rescuing Welsh historic gardens, including Hafod itself, and there will be a guided walk around the estate.

The event forms part of the Georgian Group’s Summer School, being held in Aberystwyth, 1st-5th September, though the Hafod day can be booked separately.

The cost for the day will be £60, to include coffee and lunch and transport to and from Aberystwyth if needed.

For further information and booking, please contact Michael Bidnell on 020 7529 8928, or michael@georgiangroup.org.uk.

Praise for paths

Renovation work here at the Hafod Estate has scooped a national conservation award.

The scheme to restore the original landscape at Hafod has seen 10 miles of paths restored, as well as bridges and buildings.

The Georgian Group Awards scheme, which recognises work to restore Georgian properties back to their former glory, was impressed with the work put in by John Phibbs, Dubois Landscape Survey Group and Acanthus Holden.  The Hafod scheme was joint winner of the ‘Restoration of a Georgian Garden or Landscape category.

The other winner was a landscape in Ayrshire, Scotland.

A spokesperson for the awards said the level of research that had gone into ensuring the restoration work was correct was impressive.  He said: “The project involves the restoration of Thomas Johnes’ landscape at Hafod, one of the very finest picturesque landscapes in Britain.

“Ten miles of paths have been restored along with bridges including a dramatic chain bridge and landscape buildings.

“The celebrated Hafod Walks, including the Lady’s and Gentleman’s walks, had become obscured and overgrown.  Woodland has been thinned to reveal them once more and make them more negotiable by walkers.

“The Hafod Partnership has been engaged on the current restoration programme since 1994, and all its work has been underpinned by scholarly research.”

The Georgian Group is a charity established to protect Georgian buildings, townscapes, monuments, parks and gardens.
